Marika Hackman’s 2015 release, We Slept At Last, is an album of dark, brooding alternative folk music that is beautiful and captivating. Most tracks feature Marika’s haunting vocals and acoustic guitar. Other instruments like bass, drums, piano, violin, flute and synth are sometimes used. I got turned onto this album by Jarrett New, who publishes the YouTube channel VinylEyezz, about vinyl record collecting. I generally trust Jarrett’s reviews and recommendations, and with this record he has again introduced me to an artist I really like.

This album came in a beautiful gatefold jacket with a lovely, full-sized, 24-page booklet containing lyrics and images for all the songs and a download card. This album is relatively well produced and mastered. It has a little less than average signal (-7.5 dB) and little or no dynamic range compression (+0.3 average as measured by DRC-Meter). In comparison the downloaded MP3 version has a DRC score of +3.0 and my processed version, +2.1. It is a somewhat noisy pressing, with quite a few clicks and pops but it cleaned up nicely with my software.

I really enjoyed this album (I quite like music with darker themes) and gave it 5 out of 5 stars.

Just picked this up today and it is unfortunately unlistenable due to the unholy amount of surface noise. Have I been unlucky or is this across the board?
Be nice to get the replacement instead of the refund.
