The album that reveals Knopfler's roots

It is difficult to read between the lines of a review, written by a fan. Where does the fan-atic part ends and the more down to earth listener takes over, is hard to know. But it is a start, to know that you are reading a fan review.

Mark Knopfler, is a first rate tune smith, a singer whose power is emotion, a great guitar player and most of all a true musician. His Dire straits' reputation, surely helps his solo years, since the music he releases is somehow less commercial. That doesn't mean it is inferior, but it is more personal, revealing much of his early roots influences, pre-Dire straits era. That means that the ones that expect a hit, are bound to be disappointed. The only minor hit is the starter "Why Aye man", which came out as a single, too. The rest of the songs are quieter - in a way laid back - picturesque cases of fine songwriting with folk, country and rock elements. His lyrics are great, as always.
This release is essential for fans, but what can a casual listener expect? Well, it is a record that works best in the late hours and with every spin, it reveals new layers of the exquisite production and songwriting. The songs find their way into your heart and you might even forget that it is Mark Knopfler you listen to(par the vocals), since there are but a few guitar solos. And this is the strength of the album: it would be unfitting to such music to put forward the guitar skills (there are plenty tastefully, genius licks to cover), in order to show off. Listen to the playful "Quality shoe" or the superb "Hill farmer's blues". Their quality is simplicity. (Fans were pleasantly surprised at the live shows, when a terrific extensive solo was "attached" at the "Hill farmer's blues" closing, but that was left off in order to keep the same pace through the album). It wasn't long, before other artists covered songs("Marbletown" and "Coyote" come to mind), and that is another proof.

After leaving Dire Straits in 1995 was once more clear who the musical held sway in the group. The solo albums that singer/guitarist Mark Knopfler delivered afterwards, differed in almost nothing of the sheet metal by Dire Straits. At most it became ever clearer that Knopfler in middle age. His songs never excelled in lust for life, but the man was with every album quieter and more melancholic, until the non-binding nature began to take the upper hand. Also on the songs of The Ragpickers Dream features Knopfler clearly not years walk toil. With one after another jazzy countrybluesje suffers the cd towards the end. Granted, no one mastered this genre as good as Mark Knopfler but due to his lack of ambition we almost forget that the same man ever was responsible for some of the best rock songs of the 1970s and 1980s.
