Haven't had chance to spin the wax yet, but thought I'd download the mp3's to stick in the car... Turns out they're a random heap of untagged 128 kbps mp3's... Perhaps from the same person who was responsible for the cereal-box packaging and hideously over-sharpened photos? What a way to present such a sublime piece of music, you penny-pinching pieces of shit...

EDIT: Finally got around to playing this, and it hasn't disappointed. Both versions of the album are excellent, but I think I might even prefer the Detroit version, esp Side 2. Words can't explain, but there's a different, slightly darker/tighter vibe to it, and it's frankly remarkable that this masterpiece can be heard in two complementary versions. And as for the live show: phenomenal performance and recording, it's ridiculous how good the G-Man (and his band) surpass even the album versions...! The only slight wobble is the opening of Inner City Blues, but in the nicest, kindest way imaginable, he lets the band know that they're gonna take it from the top again. And then at the end of the show, he announces that he'd feel better if he can just do the two reprise tracks again...that's perfectionism of the highest order. I was braced for a slightly rough recording befitting the era, but the only clue to its age is in the way the audience is captured, which has the kind of slightly flat/distant sound you hear on say, James Brown Live at the Apollo. The music, and the singing, though, are off the hook.

Before I bought this, even though the album is very special to me, I was thinking eight sides might be overkill, but it's really not, and it's one of the best things I've picked up in a while, crummy packaging notwithstanding, and it's still available retail. The pressing's good quality and plays great. Seeing how much the (single disc) Mobile Fidelity version's now going for, this is a very worthwhile alternative IMO.

The only bad thing I can say about this album, is how eloquently it reveals what little progress we've made in the intervening years...

Not perfect but a damn sight better than my 2012 reissue which is utter garbage. Crisper sonics more dynamic range. Frustrating it comes in a 4 disc package (and associated cost) that imho is unecessary.
