Marvin Gaye ‎– You're The Man

Genre:
Style:
Year:
Notes:
"You're The Man" is a posthumous studio album by Marvin Gaye, originally intended to be released in 1972 as the follow-up to "What's Going On".
It was released on March 29, 2019, on vinyl and digital, and April 26, on CD, through Motown, Universal Music Enterprises, and Universal Music Group to celebrate what would have been Gaye's 80th birthday on April 2, 2019.
The album includes the single of the same name, as well as the intended original album in full and other songs Gaye recorded at the time.

"You're The Man" was intended as another socially conscious record like "What's Going On" (1971), but following the release of its lead single, the title track "You're The Man", Gaye cancelled its release.
This was in part due to the reception of the song, as well as the fact that Gaye's political views were different to those of Motown founder Berry Gordy. For these reasons, "You're The Man" was long considered a lost album.

15 of the 17 songs have not previously been released on vinyl, but most were made available on CD compilations over the years.
The album will include a longer take of "I Want to Come Home for Christmas", which was first made available in 1990 after being recorded in 1972.
The physical release of the album includes liner notes written by David Ritz.

Not horrible but not great. Volume is pretty low and there was a little noise fill but I've definitely heard worse. Music of course is great

Bit of a while to picking a copy up (Europe issue) but glad i did, nice to hear slightly different versions to the singles of 'You're the man', and 'My last chance'. Also great to have material on vinyl that only surfaced officially on the deluxe cds in the 2000s. Sounds wonderful throughout but one issue, on my copy is theres a rasp sound for a good few revolutions on the fade out of 'Christmas in the city', Anyone else suffering from this? However it is something i can live with if they are all like it.

UMG gave this to Rainbo, and as usual, Rainbo couldn't be bothered to press this properly. My copy is somewhat off-center and there is a 'milky' quality to the vinyl, which is not acceptable. Given that Rainbo also horribly botched the reissue of Get on the Good Foot, they really should not be given any titles to press ever again.

I love the picture they chose of Marvin Gaye, to use on the front cover of this lp record. He looks very contemplative as if he is deep in thought. My lovely girlfriend and I often wonder just what it is he was going through his mind when the shutter of the camera clicked. My lovely girlfriend thinks he was mulling over a tasty Chinese takeaway menu, whereas I think he was merely just enjoying the sensation of stroking his fuzzy little funk beard with his finger and thumb.

How is the pressing quality of this US version pressed at Rainbo Records?

I have European (Dutch) pressing and the same, the 2 slabs of vinyl are among the nicest pressings i've acquired in the past couple of years.

And in my opinion the music is, yes, a little inconsistently produced, not polished and Marvin's voice wobbles and hits a duff note in one or two places - but its a quality selection of tracks (the Willie Hutch produced track is a winner!). I think you got to remember that Marvin Gaye was revolutionary in some his phrasing, harmonies and layered vocals and that doesn't happen without trying stuff out and guess what, it doesn't always come off!

As a few have pointed out, 80% of it you'll find as tracks scattered over some deluxe edition Cd's or the only decent tune from some compilations that cashed in with some mostly low quality studio out takes but 'You're the man' is a collection of those scattered gems and is pretty much quality from start to finish.

I was dubious in buying it as the disappointment risk factor with these kind of releases is high, but i couldn't be happier that i've got 4 sides of Marvin Gaye sounding as fresh as the other albums from the years when he soared and amazed us. Marvin you are indeed THE man.

Not sure if some of these comments refer to US pressings, I have a European pressing and it's faultless, for that matter so is the quality of the musical content, As a Marvin Gaye fan I'd have wanted it whatever the circumstances. My advice therefore is find a good copy and enjoy it!

Very good pressing, all 4 sides play flawlessly.
A download code would have been useful for the car though :)
