NEW YORK RHYTHMS VOLUME TWO picks up where the earlier one left off: nice, if uneventful, disco house. House, I feel, should go beyond its loops and become something more, and though their sound is still developing on this album, Mateo & Matos don’t quite make it there. That’s not to say that there’s nothing enjoyable on this album; indeed, tracks like “Stay With Me,” “Higher Spirits,” and “Just a Dab” hit you in the right spot. But for me, the remixes show more personality and justify the album as a whole, especially Muzique Tropique’s dark and funky take on “Keep on Dancin’” and Swag’s long, hypnotic mix of “Mama.” The remixers show their individual personalities, which is what I wanted to see from Mateo & Matos themselves. Luckily, on their next album, that personality comes out in force.
