It's hard to review this album in this day and age. Easily down as one of the Black metal legends. It's a very dark album partly due to it's dodgey past with band members commiting suicide and murdering each other, and burning churches and Paganistic/satanic imagery and lyrics.
The material on this was written really over the period of the late 80's to around 94, so the problem is, in 2013 non of that dark imagery and sentiment means much now, so to me writting a review on it now it's lost some of it's meaning and impact that it had on me when I heard it in 94.
So musically is how I have to judge this. Compared to alot of modern bands in the underground metal scene like Wormfood, Arcturus etc, it's a pretty long winded boring album blasting along at pretty much the same pace. But then again, it's not of the same catagory as the above bands.
What it is in context, is a dark fast masterpiece in the old school era of black metal. Three dense layers or icey guitaring, drums that were recorded in an empty concert hall to achieve a doubly deep bassy sound, and snarly- deranged vocals and latin chant. The tracks are well structured, and hellhammers drumming is as always technical and incredibly fast. It doesn't mean this is wall to wall speed. They do come out of wirlwind gear, like the infamous track 'Freezing moon' You certainly have to be in a bad mood or at least dark mood to fully appreciate it..if you're not in one, you will be after.

I'll give it 4.5/5 for the fact it is well played, great production unlike alot of fast BM bands of the day, and the fact it made such an impact on the underground metal scene.

The darkest album of black metal, cold like ice, dark like night. A guitarrist killed by the bassist and leader of Burzum... latin black mass at the end of the record...
