Medicine's debut album is a combination of melodic, sixties influenced pop melody filtered through decadent, sparkling and caustic noise. Criminally compared to My Bloody Valentine they've been consigned to the second rate bin, but they have their own sound and are as relevant today as they were in 1992. The original album suffered a bit from awkward sequencing; who else would start off an album with a droning, nine minute slow burning epic? Nevertheless, there's good reason to revisit the classic album in rerelease, in particular the inclusion of incredibly great b-sides like "Time Baby II" and "Onion Flower." On the other hand, the bonus disc contains numerous lo-fi tracks and demos that do not stand up to repeated listening and are mostly of interest to die hard fanatics. However, I was able to finally create my own personal vision of the original album, which is, to me, hugely satisfying:
Aruca
Time Baby 2
Defective
Onion Flower
5ive
Sweet Explosion
Queen Of Tension
Miss Drugstore
A Short Happy Life (custom edit)
One More

Maybe you'll create your own version, or at the very least, discover a truly unique, timeless shoegaze band.

Medicine are considered an American answer to bands like My Bloody Valentine. This could easily make them a target of attacks as obvious rip-offs of MBV, but they were so much bigger than just simple clones. This particular album is their debut and if will listen carefully, you will hear a good combination of ear-splitting guitar noise and bouncy pop melodies underneath it. Unfortunately, after a string of interesting albums Medicine went on hiatus and returned with a new line-up and a new album, which reportedly sounds like bleak shadow of their former selves.
