Ok, I know Sub Pop have some very nice cassette reissues, as recently as the SDRE albums, and they are certainly capable of a quality release. So, I'm sorry to submit another discogs bandwagon "this version is dreadful" post, but I do not like these very much. The sound, on my player at least, is muddy and low - very low. Cranking the volume to a suitable level brings the sound into the range where the tape hiss is clearly audible, and distracting. Added to that, the physical cassette is also cheap, the clear plastic windows that display the tape spools is actually a flimsy cellophane that is not even adhered to the cassette.

Alright, its a cassette, was never going to be the preferred or standard audiophile experience. But a little more could be expected here? I picked up the 3 album deal that Sub Pop was running and I will also say that all 3 are this way. I think the sound is clearest on the Strange Peace tape while I and II suffer even more. Of course, this is only my experience with the copies I received, maybe this is typical for the entire release or perhaps I'm just an outlier with a few bad eggs.

They didn't invent the formula, but they did perfect it. As if they started working on the album in - say - 1994 - but they weren't ready with every detail of the music till 2012.
Anyway, if you are interested what I mean by the formula - well, I found here Amphetamine Reptile Rec., Unsane, Helmet, Jesus Lizard, Nirvana... some other, younger stuff.
