Micatone’s NINE SONGS should be more appropriately titled, “Eight Songs and an Untitled Interlude,” but that’s a minor quibble. Micatone delivers eight full tracks of jazzstep goodness, all bolstered by Lisa Bassenge’s slinky vocals. “Step into the Gallery” speeds along at a head-rocking, finger-snapping pace, and Bassenge keeps up without losing a step. Strangely enough, “Tranquilo” is not tranquil at all; for mellow, you’ll have to turn to “A Part of Me.” There’s a tech sheen and smoothness on “Playmobile Soldier,” which, despite its odd conceit, works marvelously well. The final track, “Torture,” is anything but tortuous: it’s a laidback track that glides away into space.
