By 1987, after the monumental success of 'Thriller', Michael Jackson had transcended the music world and was a worldwide sensation, as a performer, an entertainer; anything and everything. Michael Jackson was "the man". And so with the world watching, he was faced with the unenviable task of releasing an album that would equal its predecessors quality. And he did.

With an unprecedented nine hit singles, 'Bad' was as big a progression from 'Thriller' as 'Thriller' was from 'Off the Wall'. While the songs certainly sound fairly dated to that time period today, they also showed a huge growth in maturity and creativity, and have become timeless classics, that further show just how massive Michael Jackson's name had become.

While many fans feel this album is full of filler material, I actually think this is some of Jackson's most consistent work, and in my opinion I like 'Bad' more than its predecessor. Having clearly ditched the funky disco vibes of earlier releases, this is 80's keyboard-driven pop at it's very best. Multi-layered, with a wide range of dynamics in the songs. While some tracks are certainly better than others, there aren't any that I struggle to get through.

Highlights, and some of these rate as personal Jackson favourites, include 'Leave Me Alone', 'Bad', 'Speed Demon', 'Another Part of Me', 'Dirty Diana', and let's face it, two of the downright coolest damn songs of all time; 'Smooth Criminal' and 'The Way You Make Me Feel'.

Whether you think this album is full of subpar filler material or not, there's no denying that 'Bad' is a worthy follow-up to 'Thriller', and its worldwide success just further cemented Michael Jackson's status as an icon. While its sound certainly reeks of the 80's (check out those drum sounds), it's still holds up well today, and is definitely a worthy addition to your collection, regardless of what genre of music you're into.
