Mike Johnson's first solo album, made at a time when he was still playing bass in Dinosaur Jr., and collaborating with Mark Lanegan. It's a downer of an album and of course it's going to bring about comparisons to Mark Lanegan, but people should remember that Mike was Mark's songwriting partner and wrote the music for most of Mark's first 3 or 4 albums. He covers Townes Van Zandt, Gene Clark and Lee Hazelwood tunes and they all fit very nicely amongst his own originals, one of his best being "Separation".
He also teams up with his old Snakepit bandmate, Al Larson and his band, Some Velvet Sidewalk, on the last two songs, "100% Off" and "Atrophy"- a very Dinosaur-ish rocker with Mike showing everyone that he is not just a sideman/hired gun, but a force to be reckoned with in his own right.

Great first effort.
