Official Release #4

Zappa intended to release this album with the 'Sgt. Pepper album' pastiche as the cover. This was vetoed and it became the inner spread, with the original inner concept becoming the cover (again a parody of said album, with band members on a yellow background, but a subtlety lost on the censors). By the time this was issued on CD Zappa had more control. His vision for the release was reinstated with the 'Sgt. Pepper' imagery on covers. This was the first Schenkel sleeve design for FZ. Ironically, the original US insert, according to the artist, was actually printed on the same press-run (at Queens Litho) as the Sgt.Pepper insert. Vinyl sleeves may also credit the track correctly labeled 'Lonely Little Girl' as 'It's His Voice On the Radio'.

The Verve cat# system was V=mono & V6=stereo. A '/' was introduced for cover print to indicate content was either mono or stereo (i.e. V/V6) and an 'X' to indicate a further change to content. (The year-earlier release of Zappa "Freak Out!" issues demonstrates this system more clearly). Blue labels indicate earlier pressings to black labels.

There are 'counterfeit' issues of 'WOIIFTM' in circulation. These usually have hand-written matrices (or none) - V6 5045X is one popular example of this, with no visible track separation & Sunset Blvd address (+audio less sharp). Note: Original US V&V65054 do have hand-written matrices.

Censorship: Beyond Zappa's control, MGM censored several tracks on early issues. "Absolutely Free" was edited to remove the word "balling", changing the context. On "Let's Make The Water Turn Black", the line "...I still remember Mama, with her apron and her pad..." was removed as it was thought "pad" referred to a sanitary napkin, rather than 'order pad'. A Lenny Bruce reference in "Harry, You're A Beast" and a spoken segment of "Concentration Moon" referring to The Velvet Underground was also deleted. Zappa later declined to accept an award for the album, stating "I prefer the award be presented to the guy who modified this record, because what you're hearing is more reflective of his work than mine."

Apparently "Original Master Recording" means very little, as it has been proven that this disc is simply a copy from the same digital master used for the Rykodisc CD that was available at the same time. And that disc was reportedly compiled from multiple available sources rather than the true original stereo tape master.

Frank Zappa's greatest work, containing his most memorable melodies and lyrics of biting social satire.
Frank didn't really care who he insulted on this one - politicians, the police and the embryonic hippie movement all come under scrutiny.
His targets on this record include; police brutality, alcoholic parents, body fascists, The Velvet Underground, fake hippies, drug takers and hypocritical politicians, liars and fakers of all hues.

Compare that list to some of his lyrical concerns on the 1970s albums that followed .... eskimos, penguins, jewish princesses, disco fans. How did Frank lose his direction so badly in the 70s? According to Ian Penman he glimpsed a few very toxic secret truths in his younger days but this unhinged him, he couldn't handle them - hence the puerile nature of much of his 70s output.
I quite like his 70s stuff by the way - I just think it's a shame he couldn't sustain the level of vitriol that's to be found on this album.

If you dig this record then you must realise it was censored quite heavily by his record company. If you hunt around on the web you can easily find an uncensored version that someone put together. I can't recommend it highly enough. I never listen to my vinyl copy anymore .... I always play the download version.

An amusing listen, a parody on Sargent Pepper's and the commercialisation of the youth culture.

Initial releases of the album had certain sections of songs edited or removed due to perceived offensiveness. These two sets of edits are often distinguished by the monikers "censored" and "heavily censored." However, these set of edits were sometimes applied inconsistently, so these two categories are inexhaustive.

Tracks affected by censor edits on all original versions:

"Harry You're a Beast": The "Don't come in me, in me" verse was edited in order to hide the offending lyric by re-editing parts of the verse in the wrong way, and reversing parts of the song. This phrase is from Lenny Bruce's "To is a Preposition, Come is a Verb" routine.

"Mother People": a verse containing the expletives 'fucking' and 'shitty' was replaced with a repeat of the first. The original verse was backmasked and appended to the track "Hot Poop" (even there, however, "fucking" is absent). The uncensored line is: "Better look around before you say you don't care/Shut your fucking mouth 'bout the length of my hair/how would you survive/if you were alive/shitty little person?"

Additional tracks affected by censor edits on the "heavily censored" versions:

"Who Needs the Peace Corps?": a spoken line "I will love the police as they kick the shit out of me" was cut out.
"Absolutely Free": The spoken word lines "I don't do publicity balling for you any more" and remark "Flower power sucks!" were removed.
"Let's Make the Water Turn Black": Several lines of the song are removed, most notably the line about booger-smearing teenage friends Ronnie and Kenny Williams' mother ("and I still remember Mama with her Apron and her pad, feeding all the boys at Ed's Cafe"). Zappa believed that the line was cut because a record company executive thought the line referred to a sanitary pad.

Censored from all but the Canadian edition:

"Concentration Moon": Gary Kellgren's whispered statement describing The Velvet Underground and The Mothers of Invention as 'shitty' was cut.

The Canadian and "heavily censored" editions also have an alternate version of "Hot Poop" that does not include the backwards "Mother People" verse.
