Everyone in love with the violent side of music has to be (or, at least, used to be!) in love with heavy metal: even if now he is a fervent supporter of hardcore spontaneity. Without any doubt, this is true for Steve Brodsky and Ben Koller - respectively singer/guitar player of Cave In and drummer of Converge. The fact that their passion for the longhaired musicians of the 80s was a fundamental part of their musical growth is evident even if one thinks about the music of their main bands: yet, to dispel any doubt, they honore their idols with Mutoid Man project. Exaltation of every exaggeration in heavy music, Mutoid Man are a parody and at the same time a tribute to early 80s heavy metal. Every metal cliché is recalled and honored with ironic taste: adrenaline riffs with supersonic speed reminiscent of Rust in Piece, melodic phrasings in pure New Wave of British Heavy Metal style, fits of anger by the double bass drum, a voice which sounds sometimes high and epic, sometimes regurgitating. Their second album, Bleeder, turns upside down the classical heavy metal thanks to the injections of post hardcore and funny and amused crossover sensibility: the result is schizophrenic, unpredictable and explosive. Anything but classic! As if Mike Patton was playing his own reinterpretation of thrash metal! Heavy music is pure fun and energy, and Mutoid Man create an exceptional tribute to these - too often neglected - aspects of this musical genre.
