Had a customer bring his "warped" version to my store the other day, I got it from him for a real good price and it plays and sounds great. MMJ isn't exactly my favorite band, but of all the albums I've heard from them this is certainly a highlight. Good stuff!

Disappointing vinyl version. Doesn't seem to be mastered for vinyl-- sounds just like the CD version to me.

Does anyone have insight on the quality of this pressing versus the ATO versions? Is it the same?

I saw an online lecture provided by TED who suggested that 'genius' isn't something that permanently belongs to someone's life - it comes and goes; settling on one person for a time then moving onto another. No-one can live their who life a genius, similarly no artist can put out a career of masterpieces; we have moments of clarity where things sometimes seem to fall into place perfectly but more often than not we don't. When I listen to this album I can't help but think that MMJ had their moment of clarity; it's a phenomenal album far beyond the efforts of their other releases, good though they are.

Reluctantly swapped for this album just before VMP expanded their swap options to include non-exclusive pressings. I can see the appeal in My Morning Jacket, but this pressing isn't great. Mine came slightly warped and isn't super quiet. The mix also seems a bit flat, and I assume this is meant to be a lush album. Overall not really up to the standards I expect from VMP (or maybe it is).

I love My Morning Jacket, not just for their killer hooks, complex arrangements or their ability to make you weep or head bang all within the same song but also for their production. Jim James has established himself over the years to have a keen ear for rock, r & b, jazz and even electronica. ‘Z’ was their first album to truly shed off their southern rock roots and embrace new production methods and more diverse instrumentation. This album is wonderful and filled top to bottom with the things MMJ does best (and not repeated again until ‘The Waterfall’ a decade later).

VMP dropped the ball on this release though. I am typically impressed by the quality of the records they release (never mind how I feel about the actual album, the mastering is typically top notch). ‘Z’ really fails in comparison to their other re-releases often sounding muddled, crunchy and lacking in the mid range. As evidenced by MMJ’s remastered ‘It Still Moves’, they have used the studio as an instrument even prior to ‘Z’ and it is unfortunate to see this album get the blunt end of the stick.

This was a sour exit from VMP for me.
While the record itself is very pretty and I didn't have any problems with warping, other versions of this record are easy to find and even after listening to the record a few times, I didn't find any of the qualities expressed by multiple reviewers. I'm not sure what I'm missing here but I found this to be an irritating record that at best settled into background noise at times. I had already used my swap so I was stuck with this. Fortunately, it wasn't hard to find someone who wanted to buy my copy.

Let me first say that I have loved this album since it came out, and it is still a great rock album. My issue is that this is another Record of the Month that I already have, and I have to believe this one was already in a lot of subscribers' stacks. Congratulations if you are a rock fan who had never discovered this album, but I have to believe with the epic ascent of MMJ to headlining every festival around the country that this one wasn't lost on many rock fans. Most likely, you either have it or don't like it enough to have it. This is a hugely popular album that is still readily available in record stores around the country. Frankly, it didn't need repressing, especially when so many other amazing albums out there are completely out of print and impossible to find. Same deal as Pinkerton and Paranoid. This trend of VMP throwing popular, available albums on fancy colored wax just for the novelty factor for the Record of the Month is bothering me. It's why I don't support Newbury Comics anymore. I've used 2 of my swap-outs for the year already, and would have this month had there been anything else I wanted to trade for.

On this pressing specifically, my first disc came warped and causes a few sound issues, primarily fluttering on Wordless Chorus. Everything else sounds pretty fantastic, and the wax is gorgeous. The lyric booklet is very cool. One picky criticism is that I don't care so much for the re-done artwork. I have always heavily associated the album with that dreamy teal color heavily featured, and they have completely removed it here for a much more intense, visceral red/pink.

It's a welcome addition on the collection, I just really wish the club would be more adventurous and focus on more harder to come by, hidden gem albums.

This is a great set because of the tracks that are instrumentals, it gives a different perspective on each song. I bought this on eBay for $5.99 plus $2.99 for shipping a total of $8.98. How is that it is listed on here for $125.00 plus $5.00 for shipping bringing the total to $130.00? That's a difference of $121.02 which is nothing more than ruthless exploitation by this seller. I do not buy from sellers like this and encourage you to do the same. This is PURE GREED!! Although this is a great version of 'Z' it's not worth grabbing your ankles for.
