Naked Funk's debut, VALIUM, is firmly of an age -- the era fondly known as the 'trip hop' era. But this album shows enough class not to sink completely into oblivion. "Dreamland," for instance, has enough dub thud to keep the dreaminess from disappearing into the ether (try to ignore the dated 'alien autopsy' samples, while "Don't Touch Duane Barry" and "Valium" add touches of mystery. The funk is slightly more pure with "Tressa Lux" and "Pearl Of Compassion," though there are handful of generic breaks tracks, like "What's That Spell" and "Alient Groove Sensation." But it's with the moody "Billy" that they start showing their chops; "Abduction" sounds like a creepy lullaby; and "Earthquake" both shakes and grooves. A good album with which to chill.
