This album shows old Nick at the top of his game, except his game isn’t “pure pop for now people” anymore, but rather a sophisticated kind of laid-back late-night rock designed partly for reflection, mostly for seduction, what I’d like to call “lovers rock” if that term wasn’t already established as part of the reggae idiom (e.g. Gregory Isaacs). Really, this is just a wonderful set of very well-written songs with totally fab arrangements (lots of sweet organ), for the most part exquisite Oldham/Penn-type ballads such as “Only A Fool Breaks His Own Heart”, “Lately I’ve Let Things Slide”, “I’m A Mess”, and “Let’s Stay In And Make Love”. A class record by a class act.
