(Not-So Quick Review #4)
Listen: #1 (and last hopefully)
You know, I listened to Rick Ross because I thought his 4 lines on Monster were kinda funny.
"Fat Motherfucker now look who's in trouble!"
And hey I looked at his solo work and it wasn't terrible.
And Nicki Minaj was in that song too! And she absolutely killed it producing one of the best verses on MBDTF. If you haven't heard it look it up its hella good. But I went in knowing that Nicki's solo work was crappy, but still having hope that it would be enjoyable as someone who actually really likes anaconda(Which is why I have hope for my listen of Pinkprint). But this was bad. Really bad. It wasn't even as much Nicki's "rapping", as it was the production. Granted Nicki wasn't hitting bars here like she just pulled up in the monsta automobile gangsta, it ranged from passible to terrible on most of the songs. But the fucking production man DAMN. Its just terrible. It's some of the poppiest production on a rap album I've ever heard. It's not a poppy sounding rap record in the veign of Kanye Wests Graduation (which I absolutely love). It sounds like someone litterally took some beats that weren't good enough for Katy Perry and she threw away and said "Aaaaaay let's have Nicki rapping over this. It's bad. Oh and they also told her that if she was spitting anywhere good enough, to tone it down so that people didn't set the bar too high for her so that they could keep on spewing out her shit and have it be shit. Oh yea, and she sings on the hooks. The hooks here are terrible.
Just to bring up the features, first we got Eminem. It was a fine verse by him but his vocals did not work at all with the beat. Also hearing him talk about how "Shady and Nicki in da klub togetha" like she was 50 or someone else he was with was funny, since Nicki doesn't strike me as a balla ass mothafucka. Secondly we got Rhianna, which she does the hook and the beat just doesn't compliment it. Then we got Drake who spit some straight fire. Nah but in all seriousness all his verse came off to me as was him being like "yo I gawt Nicki mothafuckaz" which he can't say anymore ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°). The only other feature worth noting is Kanye. While my hopes were high that this could be a dope ass track (Monster), it wasn't. The beat once again didn't work with it. I don't get why Kanye couldn't have produced it (well probably because he was working on MBDTF which released on the same day as this) since 'Ye produced some Lil Kim shit that was pretty good.
Speaking of Lil Kim, this album would have been so much better if it followed the Lil Kim Formula. While maybe toning the sexual stuff down a notch would be required since Lil Kim spat about getting dick, how much dick she was getting like no other, and how much dick she was sucking/fucking, she had a formula down. Even though none of her albums are classics or masterpieces, they're all at least good. This is because she rapped well, and rapped over RAP PRODUCTION. Wow I know, a female MC just doing normal rapping (and rapping about the normal shit, just replace pussy with dick, not to say all she rapped about was dick though). If Nicki had just rapped over rap beats, with a real rap flow this could be a good album. But she didnt and its not.
So in summary fuck this album.
My Anthony Fantano senses are telling me that this is a Strong 1 to Light 2.
