Once upon a time, there was a boy called Shane MacGowan. Shane was not particularly attractive nor particularly clever, but he had one thing only some people have: a unique voice. Eventually, Shane was able to use his voice to become reasonably famous, but before that...there was this.
This album collects two singles from MacGowan's early band The Nipple Erectors (side one) and the same band more radio-friendly renamed The Nips. The sound is pretty much the same throughout: a bit of rockabilly bop filtered through punk and sung in MacGowan's now-familiar gravelly cries. The only song on here that bears much resemblance to what would come in his later career fronting The Pogues and later solo with similarly-named bands is 'Gabrielle.' In that song, we don't hear the typical folk-laden strains of most of the Pogues catalogue, but instead it is closer to more poppy tunes like 'London Girl' or his own solo output.
Not a bad album, all things considered, and an entertaining look at the nascent talent of a future legend of 'alternative music.'
