Reviews
- Edited one year agoFlowermouth was originally recorded in 1993 with five tracks remixed in 1999. This 2005 remastered edition features improved artwork and adds two bonus tracks totaling 21 minutes; these are remixes from the deleted Flowermix album. Guests on this album include Robert Fripp, Lisa Gerard (Dead Can Dance), Mel Collins, Steve Jansen, Richard Barbieri, and more. Don’t imagine that No-Man is all quiet stuff. To quote from the liner notes, the music is “…grand but not grandiose, as monumental as the loftiest prog album, but rejecting showboating in favour of an introverted songwriter intimacy.” Certainly there are times when the intensity builds to as high a level as Porcupine Tree is capable.
- As I listen to No-Man's Flowermouth again, I can't help sharing an opinion on the band. I'm not a big Porcupine Tree fan. I feel PT is a bit monotonous and brings few surprises to my ear. I'm a huge King Crimson fan and am always looking for something that might be new to think about.
The No-Man vocal offering is similar to David Sylvian (of which Robert Fripp and others from KC briefly collaborated with in 1993). Fortunately, the "guitars from hell" sound by Fripp accompanied by other guest work by Mel Collins and Lisa Gerard provide a great juxtaposition to the low breathy vocals.
Other reviews compare No-Man to pop bands of the late '80s and early '90s which I know of, have listened to and have discarded. Perhaps the comparisons are fair, I don't know but I believe not. I think Flowermouth represents a band and guest members striving for identity and new musical direction. Note that King Crimson emerged from a 10 year hiatus after Flowermouth to release one of their best albums "Thrak".
In all, Flowermouth is 10% throw back to the 80's and 90% looking forward to something better. I can proudly keep this in my collection and even share it with others (although I hate the cover art). Next time I remix my personal KC road trip CD, I think I'll add a few tracks from Flowermouth. Good stuff.
