The Delaware River Sounding project was initiated in 1992 by Drew Professor of Music Norman Lowrey and Cynthia Poten, the Delaware Riverkeeper. After being joined by a team of artists (including Pauline Oliveros, David Dunn, Alan Gussow, Cecelia Vicuña, John Bromberg, and Judy and Doug Alderfer-Abbot) who helped design the Sounding guidelines, the project came to intial fruition during the summer and fall of 1994 in a series of seven conceptual art community listening events along and on the Delaware River, spanning 350 miles from a headwater stream in Frost Valley, NY to a ferry crossing from Cape May, NJ to Lewes, DE and back. The project, funded by grants from the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation, culminated with a major exhibit of artwork at the Independence Seaport Museum in Philadelphia over the summer of 1996, and continues with the creation of artworks in every medium.
