This is a really good album, one of Notwist’s best.

With their 2nd album widely available in the US, The Notwist don't SHRINK. Instead, they maintain their sounds, with the chugging start of "Day 7" or the elegant horns and jazz influence of "Moron." The jazz returns with the moody "N.L.," but for the most part, a contemplative rock rules the day, as the instruments circle around Acher's vocals, as on the title track. But the slow groove of "Your Signs" merges these two elements together well, and the closing track, the twitchy "0-4" show how they master atmosphere as well. Not an album to shrink away from.

Their best album by a long way. A band that started out making hardcore punk/ almost metal then moved into extremely interesting experimental electronic/indie rock with genuinely groundbreaking albums 12 and Shrink with subtle use of electronics - but after that each subsequent release becoming more pedestrian and much less interesting. Presumably they were chasing commercial success and were going for lowest-common-denominator indie rock - either that or they just ran out of good ideas - shame as this LP is superb.

Starting out as a german version of Dinosaur Jr. in 1990, "The Notwist" made a quick and astonishing development within the following 8 years, until in 1998 "Shrink" showed up with a mix of alternative-rock and electronic-pop, spiced with a little jazz influence. Maybe the guys tryed out some "Chemicals" (Song 2) to get into these spheres, but who cares, what thay accomplished here is a great piece of indie-music, hopefully not to be forgotten! - This will stay 5/5 for me until I'm dumb....

This record was released on Zero Hour, a record company that no longer exists. Therefore this record is no longer available. If you happen to stumble upon it (second-hand), go buy it!

From start to finish, this record amazed me with beautiful melodies, the fragile voice of Markus Acher, modest laidback brass, the perfect mixture of electronic sounds and ordinary instruments, i could go on for hours, just get yourself a copy!
