DISCS ON THE TRACK OF TRUTH

Out of calm peace of mind Elena Kakaliagou begins to blow her horn whilst gradually Ingrid Schmoliner and Thomas Stempkowski expose distinctive fragrances.
From the beginning on one can feel that this music has plenty of air to breathe, it is not created under stress. Nobody has to prove anything, least of all virtuosity.
With a big dose of empathy and sparse use of means the trio plays only essentials, which turn out to be the ideal. Keeping this measure requires quite some self-confidence (see also the Schmoliner-portrait in freestyle #47) and the accurate assessment one’s possibilities.
Within this limitation to silent brooding, however, individual and collective freedom flourishes. Surprising zigzags are inherent in this band concept, because they are structurally installed.
Suddenly Kakaliagou speaks a text which gains Soul due to its melody. Schmoliner causes the strings inside the piano to vibrate, Stempkowski doing the same on his double bass.
Superficially little happens for a good forty five minutes, profoundly, that is in the free play of associations in the mind of the listener, actions of adventurous proportions are occurring.
In its drumlessness at a distant glance para-ligo seems similar to the free swing of Jimmy Giuffre’s trios, only that Kakaliagou, Schmoliner and Stempkowski are even more open, unbound in approaching the matter, displaying a similar attitude with even higher risk.
In other words: This disk manages the rare trick that even repeated listening does not decrease the content’s level of tension.

High concentration, even higher playing intelligence, highest emotions.
