This album demarks for me the end of an era in the metal community. It appears as the end of the classic school thrash metal. After this nothing would be the same. Welcome to the 90s, 80s funniness and crazyness is no more.

Nothing ever sounded so mournful, with such a sense of decay and sorrow, till that moment more or less everything metal wise related had either a sense of destructive euphoria, rebelliousness or youthful lust, but with the advent of paradise lost the gate of depression was opened and sorrow will be a common adjective for the most part.
Fact is Paradise Lost-Lost Paradise is a purveyor from the regeneration of doom metal in its newer improved and modernized form,
Anathema, Cathedral and My dying bride will follow as figure representatives for doom metal generation and Death metal too will engulf with its darkness and depressive unfolds the remains of our own generation.

This is all patented here in this particular album. It is true that you can find elements from Death metal, especially in the guitar tuning, but aside from that aspect the rhythmic section is pretty much doom, low key, decayed sound contrasted by excellent lyrical section, especially in the epic “deadly inner sense”, who will not fall by that arpeggiated introit in between rhythmic section? The lyrics depict a deadly sense of impending decay and summed with its despaired and obtrusive voice they will blaze the listener with a note of abysmal doom, only death and decadance inhabits in the world pictured here and a sense of materialistic soul ness in which there is no opportunity for regeneration or renewal just pure existential despair and a feeling of eternal demise.

Seriously, this album is truly sorrowful and full of despair, even by today standards few bands in the doom metal territory can create something as funerary as this, so depressive and obscure, it puts your soul into extreme distress. Also intriguing is the cover artwork, very distinctive for whatever was made at the time and also supremely suggestive for the album title and thematic. What is that robot in that plastic gesture trying to mean? The last herald from a now extinct mankind hand risen to the cosmos? Very much close to a Michelangelo “creation” analogy, very obscure and open to interpretations...

Nevertheless this album is epic and primigenial in all aspects, truly a milestone that demarks a change of direction and perspective for metal music.
Dare to listen and enter the existential grip inside the music.

''Paradise is NOT lost''

I love thee, VILE 17...

...Thou were one of the death/doom source records among those which were composed by 1/3 of death metal and 2/3 of sleepy death metal. That was thy recipe of a potion for those deseased who were frazzled by a deadly inner sence. But were there any ones instead of me? Other way round, they were dissatisfied by your slow, viscid narration. So then is thy paradise lost by them? Surely it is, but not by me...

...That were the horrible times of mental torment I couldn't overcome by myself. Death metal in my head begun to quicken so it almost could wash it out. I prayed to our saviour to be endowed with medicine which would bring the long hoped-for relief and... And then, in that blessed moment thou manifested. All of my nightmares melted away like a frozen illusion! An illusion that was still breeding fear into my languorous mind. Thy apparition suppressed the raging death metal and turned it into drowsy and safe death/doom. Thy glorious slowness redeemed me... I fell in love with thee at first riffs... Thy watercolor look made my eyes shine with life again...

...And lo, we shall dwell together in the Lost Paradise, that is not lost to us at all. I hope so...
