I purchased this new 21 yrs ago more or less on the release date, it turned out to be the soundtrack to my time at 6th form college and university. It is one of the few dance compilation albums I have never grown tired of over all the years. It defines all that was great about mid to late 90s dance music. I'm reticent to use the word timeless as it's easy enough to date, but it doesn't sound out of place in 2017 imo. Superb.

CD3 is a mostly excellent DJ mix by the Psychonauts and James Lavelle that displays the evolution of 90s electronica from instrumental hip-hop (e.g., Paris, Most Wanted) to trip-hop (e.g., UNKLE, AIR) and breakbeat (e.g., Winx, Peshay). It's better than the Psychonauts' 'Time Machine' mix, and forms the core of their outstanding Radio One 'Essential Mix' that they would go onto produce.

There are two contrasting parts to the mix. The first half-hour flits quickly from one track to the next in The Psychonauts' trademark cut and paste style, resulting in a high energy mix that maintains interest throughout. Whilst the tracks are mostly obscure (including tracks from UNKLE and DJ Shadow that are exclusive to this mix), it's the WAY these guys use four turntables to raise the tracks to another level and make the mix much more than the sum of its parts.

Special mention is needed for The Psychonauts' rhythmical, sophisticated and diverse use of scratching. It adds a percussive layer that perfectly complements the accompanying music, but without getting monotonous or overbearing like the scratching of so many turntablists.

The second part of the mix consists of 13 minutes of dated breakbeat tracks that are overplayed and very averagely stuck together. It's a change of style that provides a slightly disappointing end to an otherwise highly innovative DJ mix.

Truly and deeply one of the best cds I've ever owned. Everyone took note at the time and if you haven't get your ears onto these cds. Best stuff of the time. The Nick Warren mix is so good it sounds like it came from Anjunabeats of today (with a healthy dose of Roland 303 of course.) I can't tell you what a time capsule this cd is. For me, many sun rises were watched from downtown Chicago lofts while this cd melted everyone's brains. Buy it cause its so progressive that even today its still listenable.

The James Lavelle CD was actually mixed by the Psychonauts, who were a little peeved to receive ZERO credit for one of the most technically accomplished mixes of it's time. If there were any doubters, the Psychonauts went on to re-record some of the mix combinations found here for their Essential Mix in '96... while James Lavelle went on to prove that he can't mix at all.
The track Clubbed to Death II only appears on this CD, and wasn't released anywhere else in any format unfortunately; it's probably the best of all the Clubbed To Death variations, and reason enough for owning this CD.
