'Classic' trance lover, here. This album seems to get a lot of hype in the scene so I was pretty chuffed to pick it up at a car boot for £1. As an artist album it's really good and showcases some amazing tracks from across the decade.

As a mix cd, it's not great. The tracks on
CD1 The tracks are from roughly the same era of remix and whilst there are some brilliant tracks on there...they all sound painfully alike. Akin to if 2 tracks were made, and then the rest of the remixes are the same two tracks but with the notes changed. Individually they're brilliant, but put them together back to back to back and it feels a little bit like spending a week eating nothing but potatoes cooked via different methods.

CD2 and 3 are 'sequenced' which in CD2s case means partially mixed, some tracks mixed, others not and in CD3s case not mixed at all. I the dictionary defination of the word sequenced they both follow an order, a vibe as opposed to the tracks being thrown on there willy nilly.

CD2s first half leans towards PVDs early remixes and are very much the early trance sound, post 1988. Some of its a bit too repetative for me. It doesn't pick up until the remix of Humate - Love Stimulation halfway through, which sadly is only 4minutes long, then from then it's newer trance but continues to be a bit hit and miss.

CD3 is 'everything else' and much more eclectic in styles than CD1 or 2, but mostly leans toward his earlier remixes, very post-88 trance sounding, 303 drums. I enjoyed about half of CD1 and CD2, some of it is just a bit too repetative.

Mixed, Part Mixed, Not mixed, it's thrown my ratings system into disarray.
(CD1) (127 out of 250) so as a mixed CD its a 2 to 3 star.

CD2 is annoying as it is partially mixed; either mix the lot or keep it dj friendly, I liked half the tracks so it's probably 2 Star. and the same with CD3, but at least that isn't mixed.

Overall, I think it would have been better for CD1 to have been a mix spanning the best remixes of 92-98, then CD2 and 3 could have been 'everything else'. A strong 2 star, almost a 3, but the lack of variety in the CD1 mix, and the 50/50 split of good bad on the other cds bring it down.

Being in inexplicable love with the old trance sound again I decided to get this one for listening to the epigones of classics like the 'Visions of Shiva' or the notorious 'Age of Love'. And moreover thru the years being interested in the experience of the suggestive repetition of rhythm and the hypnotic impact of synthetic spheres I was curious about the CDs here.

Now after I heard it several times at several occasions my only lasting impression is that there's a lack of inspired sound generally and an overdose of stupid traaance lookalikes. Don't know why this one's so celebrated here and elsewhere but this guy didn't ever catch the spirit of his first days again.

Come back to the Visions of Shiva and you'll have a better experience of sound ever possible thru the VDT collection.

If you like Trance music, then you have already heard of Paul van Dyk. This is Paul's absolute GREATEST release, spanning six years of the man's career. The title roughly translates as "Moving ahead with technology", and should be in any serious Trance DJ's collection. Each of the discs represents a phase in Paul van Dyk's career and therefore carries a unique sound. Disc 1 is the Anthem Trance music that Paul is best well known for, Disc 2 represents Paul's talent when it was first starting to emerge, and Disc 3 contains some beautiful ambient tracks; the music Paul was writing when he first started out. This could well be in the list of top five Trance CDs ever.
