★★★★☆☆ In Percy Mayfields late 60's to early 70's comeback years he delivered some stellar performances on inconsistant albums. His husky baritone voice was argueable better than during his first prime in the early 50's, his cool and lazy delivery even more prominent. Two decades of improved studio techniques also improved this unique singers performances by far. Of his late albums "Bought Blues" is the most convincing. The backing by a blues combo with a horn section suits his smokey torch songs just fine and "Pretty Eyed Baby" and "Fading Love" are among his alltime best performances. Mayfield may still be best known for penning the Ray Charles classic "Hit The Road, Jack", and the releation beween the two of them is not restricted to that fact. Vocally they have resemblences, though Mayfield never release the energy of a fiery Ray Charles. Percy Mayfield, one could say, is the sunday morning Ray Charles.
