"Release" is the biggest failure in the Pet Shop Boys career. The video for their first single is also one of the worst concept they ever came up with (some cheap camera following in a couple of rats in a subway for 3 minutes or so). Their second single is the Beatlesque "I Get Along" which was illustrated by a video of Bruce Weber ("Being Boring", "Se a Vida E"). Nice colors, nice acting, but still: the Pet Shop Boys are copying themselves in a redundant sequence of images without any form of sense. The final single, "London", was only released in Germany, probably due to poor sales worldwide. The video, also shot with the cheapest camera possible, aggravates the whole concept.
How can one of the best dance band in history arrives with such a bad album is over my comprehension. The only tracks that are potent on "Release" are probably "E-Mail" and "Samuraï In Automn". The rest is a composite of very bad pop-rock tracks (such as "Birthday Boy" and "Love Is A Catastrophe").
A few good B-sides, like "Sexy Northener", "Nightlife" and "Searching For The Face Of Jesus" should have been on the album to raise the quality of the product.
