This album dates to around the time Peter Murphy was coming into his own as a solo artist. I personally think "Deep" is his first breakthrough album (He has since has another after working with Trent Reznor) but Love Hysteria has some really great songs. Others are a little "off". A girl I dated in the 90's said it best when she said that the instrumentation clashes badly with his vocals. Certainly not all the songs are that way, but I think it is no mistake that his following albums' instrumentation gradually rises to match the depth and drama of his vocals. Love Hysteria plays like elevator music at times (e.g. My Last Two Weeks) that is jarring to hear alongside the "Godfather of Goth". That said this album plays better as a prototype sketch for his later work that gets it right far better than they got it on Love Hysteria. As far as the '87-'88 period goes I prefer the "Tale of the Tongue" and "Indigo Eyes" 12" singles. I think they reflect his talent better than this album does.

When I first heard this one, at about the time it was released, I was amazed. Now it sounds a little dated, but it's still a very good record. Definately his best solo work.

Could this be Peter's finest solo record to date?

Like the calm that arrives in the morning after an arduous night, Peter is gentle and all-too-human in this album, musing about love, keys, confessions, and mystics. I don't think he sounded this sincere and human since the Bauhaus in his tone and inflection. Definitely signalled Peter's resurgence as a creative artist after the confusion that "Should the World Fail to Fall Apart" was. I like that other album too though, but you have to admit, it was a really confusing album! (not quite like this one)

Well, Peter is doing music influenced by traditional styles I see now-- but couldn't it be charged that he is wallowing in the territory of the sacred, instead of striking that delicate balance between the sacred and the profane, which created the mystique necessary in his earlier works such as this one? It's a question I ponder once in a while.
