PHEW - OUR LIKENESS (Mute STUMM 96) CD/LP 38m
The original Phew LP had become something of a legend, and an especially curious item for Can collectors. Engineered by Conny Plank, it coupled the cream of German talent with a most curious Japanese singer, namely Phew - acclaimed as the Oriental Nico. After much less successful recordings, one made with Riuichi Sakamoto, it seemed unlikely that anything else of interest would appear. Yet, no doubt because of interest stimulated by the European CD reissue of that original album, Phew was again to be found in Conny's studio in Germany working with Jaki Liebezeit, and three other experimental rock musicians.
The amazing thing with OUR LIKENESS is that it's arguably even better than her debut LP, and Jaki is at the best he's been for ages; witness Being which is almost like Yoko Ono meets Can circa SOON OVER BABALUMA, but then every track here is something of a surprise and the music is exceptionally inventive. This is purely electric, high energy intensive rock with a heavy dose of weirdness, a fascinating counterpoint of the Oriental and European. Phew can delight, appeal and shock the listener with her amazing voice, what she sings doesn't really matter (however, English translation of the lyrics is included), it is what she does that fascinates, and the musical interaction that is so vibrant and powerful! Phew!
