Undoubtedly amongst my Top Ten favourite albums of all time, I came to Pievos via the MJR festival compilation CD Rinktinė, which was a great introduction to the genre and to Lithuanian music production. The featured Pievos song prompted me to get Menuli Baltas and I wasn't disappointed. I love the music, Virginija's beautiful, versatile voice and the instrumentation (I do really appreciate a bit of acoustic guitar plus violin). The translations of the lyrics do not, I am sure, do justice to the poetry contained within the songs (I don't speak Lithuanian) but all of the other strengths of the band shine through. They are great to watch live and I think the music transfers well to a studio album - the differences are obvious but reflect the band's style and strengths; they do not overuse recording tricks and maintain simplicity where appropriate. Sounds vary from haunting melodies to raucous riffs held together by a strong personal style. I must mention the second track, Pabudau, which I could listen to all day long without getting tired of its beauty. In short I heartily recommend the album: a genuine five stars.
