In dance music most of the attention in Acid House (88-89) went towards Rave (89-94) which includes hardcore techno. While Acid House clearly had minimalistic and abstract elements, Rave and eventually Gabber (93-96) lost that. This record fills the gap towards more obscure continuation of abstract music: Minimal Techno. For that reason this record is of importance in music history.
It is more sophisticated and abstract and less danceable than Acid House. In addition it is Techno but has no Detroit Techno feel to it. For Acid House lovers this record is an ending point and for Minimal Techno fans it's the starting point.

As stated in the description of other versions of the album, the samples in Smak, are actually from the old American science fiction TV show, "The Outer Limits". Specifically, they are from the pilot episode, titled "The Galaxy Being". Just watched it for the first time last night.
The "grave voice" is actually an alien telling mankind how misguided their ways are, right after the local military/police have shot at it.
The same episode was sampled more extensively by Gigi Galaxy (Gary Martin) for his "Interview With An Alien" EP, on Teknotika Records.

Here is the episode:

I bought this off a guy, without knowing that it lacked Okx, Helikopter, and Glob. Okx is no biggie, but Helikopter, and Glob are 2 I wish I had. I was dissapointed. It does, however, have the banger Spastik, which I can play out, in certain types of gigs. I'll have to get the other 2x LP version, with all the tracks.

The vocal sample "you're all crazy..." on 'Okx' is sampled from Ted Williams "On the edge" from the Bug Jar Compilation - http://www.discogs.com/Various-Bug-Jar-Compilation/release/3302536

Absolutely brilliant! While not necessarily made for the dance floor, this album flows so well and has some legendary tracks and samples. Plasticity, Plasticine, and I think Gak are my faves. Spastik is a lot of fun as well- though it can be a bit overplayed, heh.

hello, was just looking at my copy , i ve got one with the acid tabs, and i noticed that when you put it under u.v lights it makes it appear as though its colour marbled, when you look in ordinary light it looks marbled but in a black negative.also holding up to light it has what appears to be blobs of clear vinyl. has anyone else have similar copy and can anyone comment.

Hawtin's studio genius shines through in the form of advanced drum progressions as well as melodies formed from the minimalist of warbles and squeaks from his trusty 303. Light in some parts, deeply heavy in others but in the main, tense and ethereal. Overall, an extraordinary album. This introduced me to Plastikman and minimal techno in general.

For those interested, the Sci-Fi samples on the later tracks are from the pilot episode of The Outer Limits called "The Galaxy Being".
