Demos Less Sweet is filled with wonderful outtakes from Psychic TV's "Dreams Less Sweet" album. The quality is very clean studio with minimal surface noise or tape hiss. Interesting to note that the cover features the infamous PTV Skull featured on the cover of their first album, Force the Hand of Chance.
"In the Nursery" (back track) is basically an instrumental with no vocals by Genesis. There are several instrument back tracks on this release giving you an idea where Gen laid down his vocals and how the whole album came together. "Ancient Lights" (alternative mix) features various sound effects and chants that you hear in the album version. "Translucent Carriages" (early mix) sounds very much like the Pagan Day version except you can hear some studio chatter by GPO before starts to sing the opening lines. "Botanica" (Alternative Mix) is basically another instrumental tracks with all the back sounds and percussion you hear in the studio version. "Eden 3" (alternative mix) is yet another instrumental with some slight differences than the studio version. "Thee Orchids" (alternative mix) sounds very much like the studio version except you can hear GPO countdown before he starts singing the lyrics. Also, I can't hear any of the Holophonic effects that you hear in the album version. This sounds like it was recorded in regular stereo. "White Nights" (alternative mix) has more GPO chatter in the beginning and also has a false start then proceeds with the a version that sounds very much like the final mix that made it to the album. "Iron Glove" (alternative mix) is all instrumental and does not dip like the studio version where Monte Cazazza's lyrics are read by Monte himself. This mix maintains steady audio levels. On "Eden 2" (No Insert) you can hear the tenors warming up and improvising for the final mix that would make it to the Dreams Less Sweet release. "Nursery Funk" is a special treat on this release as you can hear a different funky percussion machine being used throughout. You also hear the numerous traffic car horns. It's a very cool mix of "In the Nursery". "Twisted" (backing track) is basically an instrumental mix of "Twisted" but it sounds pretty awesome just hearing all the sounds going out with GPO's talking over the track. "Breakthrough" doesn't sound too different than the studio mix. Gen's vocals have a bit of static on this mix. You can hear the Holophonic effects but the music sounds a little bit softer than the studio mix. And finally is "Cold Steel" (The Orchids) demo with Alex Fergusson singing all the lyrics. This sounds like the same mix that found its way onto the Pagan Day album. You can faintly hear Alex talking at the end of the mix found on this collection of demos. All in all, a wonderful treat for fans of Psychic TV "Force the Hand of Chance" and "Dreams Less Sweet" era. Would love to hear demos or outtakes from Force the Hand of Chance if they still exist.
