Before the Germans started their downtempo takeover of Brazil, the French group Reminiscence Quartet were there first with RITMO BRASILEIRO. This is a strictly jazz-based takeover, mind you, with the acid jazz stylings of the brass-and-bass centered "Numero Um" and the slightly more sedate "Gannabara's Café." But for those more interested in the rhythmic aspects of Brazilian music, "Batucada De Carioca Pt.1" is there for you ("Pt. 2" is more melodic, however), and for those who want the funk, "Jazz Thing" comes to the rescue. Meanwhile, "Listen Here" sways to its own mellow beat, and the vocals on "Rua De Lisboa" add a new texture to chew on. "After Hour" closes the album on a slice of funky nighttime jazz. Solidly enjoyable.
