This beefed-up, better finished remix version of "About Fourteen" is a deep-house gem, in the old Chicago tradition, with delicate piano licks, gentle pads, cool and groovy electronic bassline, and a soulfully lamenting male voice. A discreet, elegant and soulful record that continues the tradition of deep, elevating dancefloor melancholia a la Larry Heard with Robert Owens. The work of a true house artisan, and a rare case of artist delivering a second version more achieved than the original, improving both the production and the vibe.

What sounds like a classic Chicago-house tune, "I Won't Lay Back" turns out to be a recent release from an inspired father-son team. Tevo Howard provides simple but effective drums, bass and strings underpin some emotive, touching vocals from father Rick Howard. "About Fourteen" is similar but less stripped back (Which is a GOOD thing! Minimalism is - these days - often an excuse for a lack of composing skills!), bringing some soft chords to the fore, some touching string & piano parts and more superb vocals from Rick. Neither tune may quite reach the heights of those old Jefferson or DJ Pierre songs, but I'm just pleased to hear melodic house music like this being made - at all - let alone released.

If you enjoy old-school house music, or - particularly - if you play it out, I would recommend obtaining this EP!

i wont lay back - i'll never tire of those ageless and simplistic elements all running together to create such a beautiful melody
