What's often not mentioned is that the project that led to the creation of these 12 discs was a unique one in terms of sourcing, post-processing and mastering. It was done simultaneously with the 2011 The Centennial Collection CD version (whose digital files were later used as the basis for cutting the 2017 The Centennial Collection RSD vinyl release). But the vinyl box was quite a separate mission by a different team of project managers and engineers.

The sound of these 10" records (and sometimes the actual vintage copy chosen to work with) is an experience literally unavailable anywhere else.

The RSD triple-album release contains all 42 known Johnson recordings, and it's a brilliant set that sounds so much better than any other complete collection on vinyl to date. But it doesn’t contain the 24 versions you hear on this set. The sides replicating the original singles on these 10"s are simply sublime and unavailable anywhere else.

Do sift through the Hoffman forums from the time if you're a Johnson pedant and want to learn heaps more about the difference between the vinyl box and CD versions of the Centennial set - though be warned, you'll see an awful lot of hilarious arguments (which is par for the course on that site).

A very unique and fun way to experience Johnson's output, not only pairing the songs as they were originally released, but replicating the method many would have handled and stored them. Too bad it is a pricey set, and of limited availability. Uses the same up to date digital masters as the other official Centennial Collection offerings, this is the best Robert Johnson will ever sound, and it is superb considering the available materials.
