Easily the best Rufus Guinchard album, arguably the best ever recording of Newfoundland fiddle.

Rufus was one of the leading 20th century fiddlers in Newfoundland. (For a more complete bio, see ) This was his first album. Though he was 77-78 years old when it was recorded, his playing was still spectacular. This album does a great job of capturing it. The only accompaniment is his tapping foot. About half of the tunes here are old tunes Rufus learned from the older fiddlers in his community back in the 1910s; while these tunes are fairly common in the Newfoundland repertoire today, everyone learned them from Rufus, and these are his definitive versions.

Highly recommended.
