The quietest album I own. Cranked it to 70% to get enough sound to fill the room. Very well mastered quiet vinyl with almost too much headroom.

This is a very good album, though not up to snuff with Permanent Waves or Moving Pictures. There is one question I have to ask - is anyone else unhappy with the fact that 29 minutes is squeezed onto side one? My copy, which was almost pristine, did not fare well with my Audio Technica AT-LP120. Instead, I just found a very nice needle drop on the internet. It sounds pretty good, though. The music is very tinny, which I do not like very much. However, that is overshadowed my the amazing songwriting on this album. There is a lot less synths on this compared to the last few albums. This is the start of an era that is less complex, and follows more of a normal rock structure. Surprisingly, Rush is good at doing this! Who knew that one of the most refined progressive rock bands can make straight-forward rock music? It really is shocking. I recommend this album to anyone who likes straight-forward rock music. The only problem, again, is the production. With the right setup, though, you can enjoy this album for all it is worth! 8/10

Perhaps Presto (ed. or Counterparts??) is the last of the truly great Rush albums, because at this point in the band's career I had found myself skipping tracks. Presto sounds as though it was produced in a biscuit tin and it sounds really thin but that still doesn't detract from the band's songwriting. It's especially noticeable on early non-remastered versions of the album - apparently the tinniness comes from Rupert Hine's vision of what the Power Trio is all about - I've come to appreciate it though, it gives the music a distinctive sound. The first half of the record is Rush at it's best; only "Chain Lightning" fails to work for me. Touches of brilliance in "The Pass"; (a sequel to 1982's "Subdivisions" - Peart's observations of teenage alienation seen through a pair of wiser, more experienced eyes? It's very good anyway). Social observations continue through "War Paint", whilst "Scars" doesn't sound like anything the band have done before or since (an instant favourite). These songs, although showcasing the musicians' flair for technical skill, at the same time embody fine 'pop' sensibilities which continue in "Superconductor"; a song which ironically de-constructs the role of the entertainer, sort of like "Limelight" part two. "Anagram (For Mongo)" - as the title might suggest - disguises examples of anagrams in the lyrics ("reasoning is partly insane/image just an eyeless game") whilst the instrumentation is lush and replete with washes of Synthesizers and Acoustic Guitars. The final three tracks lag behind their predecessors; "Red Tide" is a passé environmental commentary, "Hand Over Fist" and "Available Light" are kind of bland, AOR slush, however before we get to this point i'm done listening.
