It is always interesting to note that when Kompakt attempts to expand into new musical territory, releases on Kompakt Pop seem to come out more frequently (and by more frequently, I mean like three or more a year), adding to the somewhat ironic nature of the label. Often, the direction set out by these releases is not completely obvious, except in this case, where they are clearly indicating a lean towards the sound of 80s new wave. They've even got 80s mainstays The Pet Shop Boys to produce the track.

In my mind, two main questions arise. The first is are we just going to work through the decades continuing to recycle every style in the sequence in which it was originally had? I mean, it seems everyone is all done with 80s style disco, so new wave was next, right? The next one is whether Kompakt is trying too hard to push the next big thing. It's clear they are already subtly moving towards such a sound with the return of Burger/Voigt (formerly Burger/Ink), so why have this?

Although this release does feel a little forced and overly calculated, it's not half bad. The Pet Shop Boys remind us that they are still great producers, even if they're not at the forefront of the genre anymore. Mark Reeder's mix could simply be renamed the Club Mix, as it probably would have been back in the day. Gui Boratto's mix gives a little more modern inflection, but loses most of the dreaminess of the other versions in the process.

I could still go either way on this one. It has this feeling of being either the release that's going to make Kompakt's upcoming catalogue, or the release that signals the downfall of Kompakt. In time, we will know.
