Bootleg repress. Do not buy.

Record sounds dead - lacks any of the punch you'd expect though it appears that that may be because its just ripped and pressed from the CD.

The pressing I ended up with was awful. Mathilde started twice - very quietly and then properly about a second later. 'Montague Terrace (In Blue)' is a disgrace - you can hear the compression noise floor rising every time there is a moment of silence and there are also a few major noises through the song mainly in the left channel.

I gave up after these two songs - for a 180gram pressing if it was in any way reputable these issues wouldn't be there - and I'll be returning it tomorrow.

4.5/5

The first Scott Walker solo album is a strong showcase of the singer's musical vision. Past influences and future ambitions juxtapose brilliantly throughout the record, mixing his unique, deep crooning tradition with bizarre themes, from which the Brel translations and Walker's own compositions are plain extraordinary. The extreme contrasts of the songs' structures, a balance between chaotic themes and saccharin orchestrations, would become Walker's trademark during his late 60s' records. As his career developed, Walker would become a deeper and darker artist, slowly getting rid of the ultra-sweet arrangements of his early career, and Scott (I) acts as the perfect bridge.
