Primitive, deferential, masterful

Released in 2011, KAIROS was the twelfth full-length album by Brazil’s Sepultura, a sort-of concept album based around the theme of time. An ancient Greek word, ‘kairos’ means “the right, critical, or opportune moment.” The album marked kick-axx drummer Jean Dolabella’s second and last album with the band.

Post-Max Sepultura is my go-to band for primal-but-technical death/thrash/power metal with tribal-oriented percussion and various diversified elements (e.g. violin, cello, piano, bells, whatever). For those not in the know, band leader/composer Andreas Kisser joined the band as lead guitarist in 1987 in time to influence the group’s second album, SCHIZOPHRENIA. He brought a more technical expertise to the band, which can be increasingly observed in the post-Max Cavalera albums. Max, of course, departed the group in early 1997 to be replaced by Cleveland, Ohio’s Derick Green on vox. I wasn’t crazy about Green at first, but I’ve come to fully accept him as the band’s formidable front man as he’s gotten better – actually great – and more diversified as the band progressed.

“Dialog” is one of my favorite tracks on KAIROS. It features spoken word stanzas over clean-channel guitar along with a catchy chorus and interesting speed-riffin’ during the mid-break. Other highlights include: The infectious Ministry cover “Just One Fix”; the primal title track; “Relentless” with its solo section and corresponding haunting acoustic part; the double-bass driving “Born Strong” with its doomish chorus and effective mid-section with the potent line “Don't you know I'm strong? Don't you know you're wrong?”; and the speedy & hooky “Embrace the Storm.” Actually, every proper track brings something interesting to the table, like the atypical and apocalyptic “Structure Violence” and its standout percussion work. I say “proper” because there are four instrumental cuts, all around 30 seconds. There are also two Bonus tracks, one a Prodigy cover (“Firestarter”).

While I favor NATION (2001), DANTE XXI (2006) and MACHINE MESSIAH (2017) for various reasons, KAIROS is nevertheless mandatory modern Sepultura and masterful thrash/death/power/tribal metal from beginning to end.
