The story goes it was while blasting Raekwon’s mega opus “Only Built 4 Cuban Linx...” loudly in the back of a van that Chocolate Tye and Mr Walt (of Beatminerz fame) decided to gather up a crew of dudes spitting their life story over dope beats. Said and done. Tye brought in his cousin Tee Black and soon they were joined by Reverend Al and Rambo. The double A side single “Change / When It Rains It Pours (Survival Warz!) was the first vax they dropped and the one they would be remembered for.

Change is thematically a bit reminiscent of Wu-Tang’s C.R.E.A.M. and the Ahmad Jamal sampled beat is like the distilled essence of the mid 90’s New York sound. If you already know of Black Moon then you’ll get the picture. The downplayed less is more approach on both sides is a key ingredient and reason I believe for the tracks proven longevity. Shadez of Brooklyn never reach anywhere near the heights I’m sure they dreamt of back then in that van, but at least they can take pride in the fact that a quarter of a century later their first single is still spinning and inspiring. If you have a copy, treasure it! And never be afraid to embrace change.
