Sodom ‎– Obsessed By Cruelty

Genre:
Style:
Year:
Notes:
This album was recorded twice. The first recording was turned down by the record label and they sent the band to re-record it again. The Metal Blade and Banzai LP versions and all CD versions contain the first recording while the Steamhammer and Woodstock Discos LP versions contain the second recording which features the song "After the Deluge". On this song, the guitars were played by their then-new guitarist Ahäthoor. The second recording has also never been officially released on CD and most of the CD releases mention an incorrect tracklist.

What version is featured on this cd? It states After the Deluge so I'm guessing if it is correct, then it must be the later version. Sounds like this album was quite a mess with what was released, and on what versions.

If this had a better production this would be the superior version.
The intro here has organ parts while on the de version its just spoken word.
And the solo in Equinox actually sounds like a solo (On the DE Version I always thought it was a horn, but turns out its a failed bass solo). The bassline on Volcanic Slut here also sounds better than on the DE Version.
But overall the German Version on Steamhammer is better.

Despite what is written on the back cover, the Banzai version is not the second recording of the album (made near Nuremberg) but the first, rejected version (made in Berlin). The "intro" to both recordings are very different: the Berlin one lasts 1:53 (despite what is written on the Banzai label) and mainly uses slowed down vocal, organ and guitar feedback while the Nuremberg one lasts 0:55 and features drum, bass, guitar and vocal instead. In short: if there is no drum beat but an organ in the intro, it is the first, rejected, Berlin version; if there is a drum beat and no organ in the intro, it is the second, company-approved, Nuremberg version.

Taken from Metal-Archives' additional notes on the album:
Obsessed by Cruelty was actually recorded twice, and both versions of the album were released in different territories due to an error by the record company. The first session was recorded in Berlin, supposedly by Horst Müller, with Destructor as the guitarist. The record company deemed the recording quality to be too poor for the album to be released, so all the tracks, as well as a new one called "After the Deluge", were recorded again at Studio Hilpoltstein (near Nuremberg) by Bobby Bachinger, with a new guitarist called Ahäthoor (aka Assator).

The original, rejected, recording from Berlin was accidentally used on the original US edition, released by Metal Blade, and most editions of the album on all formats. Only the European Steamhammer edition of the LP seems to contain the second recording from Studio Hilpoltstein with the additional "After the Deluge" track.

Taken from the Banzai Records Tribute Page:
The tracklist on the back cover and label is different than what's actually on the record.
The track "After the Deluge" did not apear on this version of the album, nor the Metal Blade.
It only appeared on the european Steamhammer re-recorded 2nd version.

Taken from Wikipedia, showing the track listing and duration of both recordings:
"Two different versions of this album exist. The band had to record the album twice because their record company was not satisfied with the original result. The first version was recorded in Berlin, and was released on vinyl by Metal Blade Records in the United States in 1986. The second version was recorded in Nuremberg, and was released by Steamhammer Records in their home country of Germany in the same year. According to Tom Angelripper, the second recording is "completely different", because they had a different guitar player."

I don't know if all the run is that way but on my vinyl copy of the Banzai records edition, VOLCANIC SLUT is written on sleeve and label and is absent.
