The first 100 customers to pre-order ‘The Island Years’ with the Official Sparks Store will receive a signed art print of the iconic ‘Big Beat’ sleeve.

Sparks: The Island Years, a collection of the band’s four Island Records studio albums from 1974-1976 along with a newly-created adaptation of the 1979 compilation, The Best Of Sparks, punningly retitled The Rest Of Sparks.

Includes download card.

The heavyweight vinyl box set includes Kimono My House, Propaganda, Indiscreet and Big Beat and a fifth LP, The Rest Of Sparks, that rounds up all of the band’s Island B-sides from the period, most of which have never previously been available on vinyl album, while the tracks ‘Looks Aren’t Everything’ and ‘Intrusion/Confusion’ are making their debut on vinyl.

Good quality box set. The records sound good. My only problem is with the “The Rest of Sparks” compilation: the band’s name is misspelled on the spine.

A very nice set indeed. Thick, glossy sleeves, strong inner sleeves and very clean, thick vinyl. The only complaint is that the Big Beat and Rest Of Sparks sleeves are terribly reproduced. Universal are known for dispensing with all of their original artwork so their represses use scans of original LP sleeves. Kimono, Propaganda and Indiscreet all look really good but Big Beat has a blemish from the original scanned sleeve in the upper left and is dull and hazy overall, and the Rest Of Sparks has terrible color and contrast. The cost is high but I waited until I could find the set for $75 total. The outer box is very thick and glossy, and it fits the LPs very nicely. The download card allows access to MP3s of all songs, though I would have much preferred a lossless download option. In general, a very nice set for completists and collectors.
