Pepper [The Hot Mix] has Speedy J pouring his heart out all over the track, with a really touching melody, giving it that true to the roots trance sound, where the lead will help your feet rise meters up and above the dance floor, while intricate sub layers, and pads arise from the background, perfectly blending with the main melody, creating a uniquely harmonic sound, thus providing the listener with multiple choices of what to focus on. A remarkable track, with an honest, simple yet emotional attitude in the melody department.

The extract from a 1994 Speedy J live act consists of three tracks: Ginger, Pepper and Flashback. After a long, melody driven intro, seconds before the two minute mark, the beat kicks in, and from there on it's all about creating a tranced out mood, with hypnotic, repetitive and incredibly mind soothing and smooth patterns, with an abbundance of playful acid synths. Overall, the whole segments is skilfully mixed up, so it really sounds like an uninterrupted 15 minute narration.

If you like music which crosses genres and combines dance floor friendly with trippy and intelligent, then this is for you! Old school techno which isn't afraid to venture far into straight up trance territory and retrieve best from both. If Speedy J's "G Spot" impressed you in any way imaginable, rest assured, the second and the third track here don't fall far behind. A well deserved 4/5.
