This is the Spice Girls 2000 comeback after a break (world tour+pregnancies+marriages+uk tour+solo projects) and their first offer taken from their long awaited third album.
They showcased the track nearly a year before its official release the first happening during their 1999 UK Christmas Tour and later at the 2000 Brit Awards, where they won an Outstanding Contribution to Music.
Being quite different from their previous sound, as a single it has been coupled with a more usual ballad, "Let Love Lead The Way".
The aim was to obtain a more mature sound, and with the R&B influence taking over the world at that time the Girls opted for an american production: Rodney Jerkins , aka Darkchild.
Jerkins was fresh from a bunch of US chart toppers (Toni Braxton, Brandy & Monica, Destiny's Child, Jennifer Lopez) and that was the direction the Girls wanted for their upcoming release.
The result? A pop track with an R&B influence, a more adult and sultry image for the video and another #1 in their homeland, with a nice chart run around Europe.
This was probably enough for the first single, but they decided to create an entire album with this formula and at this point fans were divided: the whole "Forever" album is more american than expected and it sounds more Destiny's Spice than the Spice Girls (compare the "Forever" cover art with the self titled Destiny's Child album, the first being a tribute to the second one).
After an average start the album failed worldwide, no tour has been planned and no further singles have been released; how sad, the production was great and the four remaining girls (Halliwell left in 1998) sounded at their best vocally.
As for "Holler", Masters At Work remixed the official club version, adding a more dance attitude and a touch of tribal sound to the track.
