"Kicking Up A Racket" on repeat! SLF IS THE BEST!! I never fucking get tired of them. I'd pick them over the Clash. Clash is just OK. SLF are much cooler and I'd rather listen to them most days. You can only listen to the first Clash album so many times in a row before getting bored. SLF is different.. I've never got bored of listening to them!

Back when I was a teenager and downloading as much music as I possibly could from Audiogalaxy, Stiff Little Fingers were one of the first ‘old’ bands I came across that I really enjoyed. Part of the appeal for me was that SLF songs seemed to have aged well and didn’t sound dated. But Go For It was one of their albums that never quite stuck.

I picked this up at a (not at all rocknroll) vintage fair from heartandsoul records, wanting to give it another try. The album opens with the familiar thumping bass and drums, and you’ve got the unmistakeable SLF sound that now reminds you of a million shoddy imitators. Expect plenty of catchy hooks and refrains, and a solo on every track (well, almost).

Go For It has some fun songs, starting with the opener and through tracks like ‘Kicking Up A Racket’. A lot of the fun feel derives from the reggae and ska influence that comes through more strongly on this album than on their earlier work – there’s even a sax in there. But there are darker themes too – anyone for a stabbing in ‘Piccadilly Circus’? Some tracks don’t sit comfortably together and convey distraction.

The album never really leaves the starting gate. Clearly, you shouldn’t judge an LP by its cover. Go For It lacks the urgency of other SLF releases, or at least sits on it. You feel an undercurrent of coiled passion both in Jake Burns’s vocals and in the rhythm. But it never breaks through and what we end up with is a laid-back album with a more poppy feel than some of the band’s contemporaries like The Ruts. No doubt there are good songs on here, but as an album it leaves me feeling a bit flat.
