A2, with its beautiful, touching and soft piano keys is really the stand out track here! With a really lush touch to it, and a slower pace, the harmonic passages are given a lot of space to breathe and develop, so Surgeon creates this sensation of the music getting louder and the melody more emphasized, back to quieter parts, until it all gently fades out... A desert island track, for sure, and one of Surgeon's lighter, but utterly amazing and dynamic pieces.
As for the rest, "East light" is maybe one of my least favorite Dynamic Tension releases. Repetitve rhythmic patterns wander with no variation, tension, or development of any kind. Very minimal and stripped, but not in a way where the nudity of the music lures you in with its scarse and hypnotic arrangements, it rather frequently gets to the point where I am not able to enjoy any other track more than two minutes deep, as the samey and unimaginative sound patterns and textures tickle my nerve.
B1 is slightly more interesting and captivating than A1 and B2, which are just too dull and aimless for me to enjoy, despite the fact am I a Surgeon-'til-one-of-use-dies dedicated follower. B1 has these cool mechanical effects made out of cymbals, plus it has this really shoving bass line, so on a proper sound system, the combination of the strong bass and piercing cymbals comes out as a winner!
Anyways, just make sure to check out the A2 tune. Unfortunately it is a pretty unique piece of work in Surgeon's opus, and what is even more unfortunate, nothing on this release not so much as touches the beauty and delight of that track.
"Body request", "Learning", "Klonk" and "Dry" would be my recommendations and excellent starting points to get a competent idea of the sound Anthony Child pursued with his Dynamic Tension imprint. Too bad "East light" doesn't have much to show in either department; be it dynamics or tension...
