Probably the best Swans recording. Reissue would be highly welcome.

I was on a massive Swans kick around 84 / 85 / 86.
I saw them at the Zap in Brighton in 1985. An oft-told story, so excuse me if I'm repeating myself, but they filled up the small arch of this tiny club with their own PA system. The noise was severe. Each pummelling down-beat of a power chord sent shock waves through the crowd. I felt myself moving backwards with the bass pressure. My face was moving like it was subjected to massive G-force and my trousers flapped in the breeze. It was the almost-silence between each bone-crunching blast that was the most frightening - knowing what was coming next. My ears rang for 3 days afterwards.

I managed to score a nice white label of Holy Money by switching copies with the one at work (yes, I worked at a place where they had Swans records). Imagine my delight when I opened a promo mailer to see the Public Castration sleeve smiling beguilingly at me from within. And then imagine my horror to discover that there was only one copy of the correct record inside - the other disc being a copy of Cop. Why did this happen? I never found out.

The same year I bypassed a copy of Walls Have Ears by Sonic Youth in HMV. Dagnabbit.

I interviewed Michael Gira twice, in 85 and 86, but the tapes are lost, alas.

For anyone interested in getting an excellent and very reasonably priced version of this then I recommend the WAVEFORM files or ALAC files on Bandcamp as they sound amazing!

Ok.

This is my contestant for the prestigious price of "Heaviest album ever". I've heard alot of fucked up shit in my day but this - This takes the cake whitout even asking. There's not a single recognisable note on this album. The percussion and guitar both sounds about the same and the bass sounds like chains being thrown in an empty building. And then there's Michael Gira - God help us all. He is definitely the darkest and most hateful vocalist ever in my book. His lyrics are a gruesome, psychological nightmare. What this album basically sounds like are organised explosions with Gira howling like he's suffering immensely. Which he probably does.

This is REALLY not for everyone. Misanthropy, despair and pure hate in it's loudest, darkest and most uncomfortable form. 10 god damn stars.
