The shuffle of "Yes It's True" kicks off the upbeat jazz of Taxi's BLUE ZERO ONE, a little downtempo gem. Sometimes the vocals might go slightly overboard with the soulful improvisations, like on "People Come Running," but it never really detracts from the overall enjoyment. There's a spareness to the compositions, full without being overstuffed or overproduced: "No Way Talk" focuses on the double bass, a few piano chords, a sax and a few guitar licks to accompany to vocals, while "Devil" is almost all beats and jazz piano-synth. Indeed, the arrangements contribute to the smoky, speakeasy feel of the album. The deeper vibe of "Rely on Me" or the slow burning groove of "I Just Can't Win." "Black and Blue' has a darker edge to it, while "Lovefool" swoons back into a kind of romance. An album good for late night chilling.
