Mastered by Don Bartley at Studios 301

This exclusive Audiophile record came into existence following a decision by EMI Australia to try their hand at half-speed mastering for a reissue series.

This LP never went on sale in regular record stores, but was made exclusively available to the public at the Sydney Hi-Fi And Audio Show on July 3rd 1983. Just 497 numbered copies were released with unique label artwork, mirroring the black and silver one EMI box Parlophone labels of 1969, and housed inside a single pocket picture cover with AUDIOPHILE designated on the back. Each LP had an individually numbered sticker fixed to the top right corner of the back cover.

The legendary “Audio 5”, the Aussie’s attempt at “...Pepper”. For me, this cut is a disappointment, mastered unevenly and way too loud! There is a totally unnatural sounding low end throughout, with spotty shrill mids and highs—it’s an overwhelming listen that fatigues the ear almost immediately, like when kids play music too loud with the bass turned way up. However, I have to say that the mastering sounds quite modern really in some respects, way ahead of it’s time for 83’, and on par with current mastering trends....a precursor more or less to what Mr. Giles Martin has recently accomplished with the newly remixed “Pepper...”.

An interview with Don Bartley on the history and creation of the Audio 5 release. Considered the rarest Sgt. Pepper LP due to its scarcity on the market and low number of pressings (less than half of the Nimbus run). A unique 30ips 1:1 copy of the original Pepper master tape at Abbey Road was used for this album.
